VITAMIN B5

DESCRIPTION:

Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin sometimes nicknamed “the anti-stress vitamin” for its role in our response to stress. It’s also one of the only vitamins that the body can synthesise in very small amounts through intestinal microbiota. However, so little of it is stored that daily requirements have to be met through diet.

ROLE:

Vitamin B5 helps produce skin cells, mucous membranes, hair and nails, in addition to keeping them healthy. It also plays a role in regulating the central nervous system by contributing to neurotransmitter synthesis. To a lesser extent, the vitamin is involved in cell regeneration and energy production.

    SOURCES:

Large quantities of vitamin B5 are found in food sources, particularly animal products. However, it can also be found in whole grain products, legumes, brewer’s yeast, oilseeds and vegetables.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Excesses and deficiencies of this vitamin are both rare. However, processing foods can destroy a large portion of their vitamin B5 content.
